Modeling a Multi-Seam Coal Reserve Using RockWorks

This study documents the modeling and visualization of a multi-seam coal reserve, including entering the data into Excel and importing into RockWorks, and visualizing the observed data in borehole location maps, 3D logs ,and hole to hole cross sections. Stratigraphic layers are interpolated and visualized as a 3D stratigraphic model, projected cross section, and fence diagram. Isopach maps and volume reports are included. (10 pages)

Computing Aggregate Reserves for a Site with Two Isolated Carbonate Units

This paper describes how to use RockWorks to compute total economic reserves for a site that includes two carbonate units: an upper limestone and a lower dolomite, separated by a shale unit. It involves creating separate I-Data models using the Stratabound filter, combining the models, and checking them against the observed log data. (5 pages)

Volumetric Analysis & Three-Dimensional Visualization of Industrial Mineral Deposits

This paper details how to use RockWorks to model and analyze industrial mineral deposits, including the differences between borehole data and non-borehole data, and the concepts of and differences between grid (surface) and solid models. It offers an overview of modeling strategies (stratiform / non-stratiform, isotropic/non-isotropic), how to model multiple components and compare them, and options for visualizing the results. Finally, it discusses volume computations and extraction models. (24 pages)

Sand and Gravel Case Study

This paper discusses creating a RockWorks borehole database with drillhole locations, observed lithology and downhole measurements of percent sand, gravel, and clay. 3D logs are used to visualize subsurface data, and solid models are generated to represent the materials. An extraction pit model can be generated. This paper is a simpler version of the Volumetric Analysis Industrial Mineral paper. (5 pages)

Using RockWorks for Dredge Mining

This paper discusses creating a RockWorks borehole database, with downhole percent-sand/silt/clay measurements. A solid model representing percent-sand is generated, and transformed into a 3D Boolean model where % sand > acceptable minimum. This model is then transformed (“flattened”) into a 2D grid model of acceptable-sand thickness, where a mine plan polygon can be digitized. The sand thickness grid model is clipped with the polygon and volume computed. (8 pages)
