PLog- field data collection software |
During the past decade, it has become commonplace for surveyors to utilize digital field data collection technologies such as total stations and GPS units. Such a paradigm shift to digital field data collection is yet to occur in mainstream geo-engineering applications. PLog utilizes digital technology to the fullest extent in order to provide an efficient, consistent and reliable field data collection system.

|
Specifically, PLog facilitates recording subsurface exploration data using customized, form-based software for Palm OS handheld computers. The handheld application consists of smart forms that aid the field engineer in logging data reliably, accurately and efficiently. Within the software, text input is minimized using buttons, lists and checkboxes that provide a comprehensive set of choices for the user to select and information browsers to verify and modify the input data. |

The software employs a relational database to maintain the links between the various hierarchical data entities typically recorded for a boring log. Once field data has been collected, a customized conduit transfers the data from the PDA to a Microsoft® Access database on a personal computer or server for analysis, visualization and borehole log generation. |

| Advantages of the PLog field data collection system |
Increased productivity: PLog allows a geotechnical firm to increase productivity by providing a seamless process integration of field data collection, data digitization, processing, analysis and visualization. The emphasis is on customization. The entire system is modular and flexible and can be customized as per the needs of the user. It provides the field engineer with a standard procedure for documenting subsurface data, which facilitates consistency and completeness in field data collection.

Eliminates duplication of effort: Traditional field data collection requires multiple data entry. Engineers document subsurface data on field logs, which are digitized by inputting the parameters into a personal computer upon returning to the office. PLog simplifies the field data collection process by providing a direct means for digital data entry. This digital field data can then be easily transferred to a personal computer and imported into applications such as gINT for data processing and generation of customized borehole logs.

Integration of hardware: field data collected with other hardware devices such as GPS units and digital cameras can be integrated with the PLog system. Relational links arising from data obtained using these other digital hardware devices are maintained automatically by the system.

Relational database for data archiving and retrieval: The PLog integrated field data collection system employs a relational database to store data, thus it is able to automatically track and manage all the relational links occurring throughout the hierarchy of subsurface exploration data.
Central database: PLog provides the user with the capability to create a central database of subsurface information. The database can store borehole data for all projects undertaken by a firm to ease archiving and retrieval for future reference. |
