Surfer Scale

Recommended Posts

I am new to using Surfer8...I want to print a contour map 24in X 24in in a 1-24000 scale. How do I convert for map units? When I tried to place my scale bar on the contour map it was way out of proportion.

Hi Steph,

Surfer specifies the scale using page units and map units, e.g. 1 inch = 2000 feet and 1 cm = 100 m.

To specify a "unit-less" scale like 1:24000, convert the unit-less scale to the page units and map units used by the data file. If your page units are inches and your map units are feet, use the following values for the conversion.

1:24000

1 inch = 24,000 inches

1 inch = 2000 feet

Enter 2000 in the Map units field on the Scale tab of the Properties dialog. The Length field will adjust a new value based on the XY min max of the map.

If map units are in meters (common for UTM maps) and the page units are in inches, perform the following conversion:

1:24000

1 inch = 24,000 inches

1 inch = 2000 feet

1 inch = 60.96 meters

Enter 60.96 in the Map units field on the Scale tab of the Properties dialog.
