Clipping Stratigraphy model to canyon surface in RW2006

In the steps outlined below, you are basically going to filter each strat unit to the canyon surface and re-build your strat model according to these filtered units. When RockWorks creates a strat model, it automatically creates grid models in your project folder with a default name that includes the name of the unit and an “_to” or “_base” after the name to represent the top and base grid file. Even if you filter each GRD files, when you re-create the strat model the program will just re-create the default upper and lower grids for each unit. That is why there is the option to uncheck “Interpolate Surfaces” when creating the strat model. If un-checked, the program will just reference the GRD files which have the default name, so you can edit/filter the original GRDs, name them exactly the same as the original, and essentially trick the program. Here’s how…

1. Assuming that you have created the basic stratigraphy model, you will notice in the project folder that there are GRD files for both the upper and lower surfaces for each unit (they will have the _top and _base in the name).

2. Navigate to the Utilities section of the program. I assume that you have already created a surface representing the elevations for the canyon surface. If not, you can create one in this section of RockWorks.

3. Go to Grid | Limit | and you will need to filter the top and base GRD files for each unit. In your case, you will want to use the High-stop/ low-pass, where the Grid A would be each stratigraphic surface (both the upper and lower grid file for each unit) and Grid B would be the canyon surface grid. Also, you will want to name the output grid file (“C”) the same name as the starting grid that is to be filtered (hopefully the explanation above makes sense).

4. Then when each GRD has been limit-filtered, you can just go to Stratigraphy | Section | Modeled, be sure to uncheck “Interpolate Surfaces” and there you go.
