Peter,  RockPlot3D does not have a 3D Shapefile import, but it does include a 3D DXF import.  If you are able to convert your shapefile to a DXF file, this is probably the best way for you to proceed.  If this is not an option, please go ahead and send your shapefile to tech@rockware.com, and we'll see if we can come up with a workflow for you.

Best Regards,

Alison

Sorry my question was not very precise:

I have a 2D-shapefile (contourlines)

They have an attribute which contains elevation.

I want to use this data to interpolate a surface (elevation model).

How would I do that?

thanks and sorry for confusion, Peter

Peter, thanks for the clarification!  You can extract elevations from the contour line vertices into the Datasheet using the File | Import | SHP menu.

Once you've created an .RwDat file that contains the XYZ elevations, you can created a grid based on this data through the Grid | Create | XYZ to Grid program.  The grid can be displayed as a 2D contour/color map, or as a 3D surface.

Some things to mention:

1.  You'll want to make sure that the units and coordinate system assigned to the X, Y and Z columns in the RwDat file are accurate.

2.  You should be sure that the Grid Dimensions specified in the Dimensions tab (towards the top of the RockWorks window) match the data you've imported.

I hope this helps.  If you run into any problems, it would help if we could take a look at your shapefile.  You can send this to tech@rockware.com.

Best Regards,

Alison

Hi Alison

Unfortunately I've not had any success. I'll attach my files:

shp

datasheet (as imported into RockWorks

Grid as created by XYZ to Grid

the Bugreport when the XYZ to Grid crashed. I think it crashed when it should have displayed the result.

I'll send the files to tech@rockware.com

Thanks, Peter
