P-Data, 3D model

Dear All,

I have just started using Rockworks and I am encountering some difficulties, please could you help in answering the following 3 questions:

1- How we can show the exact P Data at defined elevation or depth on a log

2- How we can keep the appended map for a section with the same scale when we are using a vertical exaggeration for the section

3- How we can show the elevation on a 3D solid model.

Hi Rachid,

Welcome to the forum! Here are some answers to your questions:

1. You can create an individual 2D log for any borehole using the Striplogs | Single Log (2D), and the 2D Striplog Designer tab is used to select which types of data you wish to view in the log display. You can plot up to 4 curve columns representing P-Data measurements.

If you need to know the actual measurement at any elevation, the best method is to use the P-Data | Export | P-Data -> ASCII XYZG File menu option. This will create a listing of the data for a single "track" or P-Data column, for a single hole or for all enabled holes. You can choose to export all measurements, high values only, low values, etc.

2. If you are stretching a cross section in the RockPlot2D display window, then everything in the diagram becomes stretched, including the embedded location map. Your best solution is to create the location map separately (choose "Display Map As Separate Diagram"). You can then use the ReportWorks page layout program (via the RockWorks Window | ReportWorks menu) to compose a composite layout. You can add text, raster images, RockPlot2D images, etc.

3. You can include a "Reference Cage" in your 3D scenes, with labels for the X and Y axes as well as elevations.

If you wish to display a surface in the 3D display which represents the ground surface elevations, there are many ways to do this.

a. If you already have a GRD file representing the ground elevations, just double-click on that GRD file name in the Project Manager, choose "Create 3-Dimensional Grid Diagram", save the resulting surface scene, and then append that (File | Append) to your existing 3D solid model scene.

b. If you need to import the surface topography grid model, use the Utilities Grid | Import tool, then follow the steps above.

c. You can interpolate the surface elevations from the Borehole Manager records using Map | Borehole Locations, turning on the Surface Contours layer. Then follow the steps in "a" to display that GRD surface in 3D.

Hi Molly

Thanks for your answers but concerning my first question, I am making cross sections between few boreholes and I have as P Data some UCS values at certain elevations, which I would like to see as numbers at the corresponding elevation and not as curves, is that possible ?

Hi Rachid,

Unlike I-Data, we don't offer text labels for P-Data tracks, because most Point datasets have too many values to plot reasonably.

You would need to copy the measurements to the P-Text table in order to display the value labels. Then turn on the P-Text column in the striplog designer. The easiest way to duplicate the data will depend on the number of holes and amount of data. Quick copy/paste is available using the "edit as spreadsheet" option - via the Spreadsheet button at the top of each data table.

Or, bulk import would be available via the File | Import | XLS option. Going this route, you could first export your current data to Excel (using File | Export | XLS), exporting only your Locations and P-Data and P-Text for all holes. Then, in Excel, you would copy the desired data from the P-Data worksheet to the P-Text worksheet, being sure that the listing is sorted first by borehole ID then by Type. Then import the P-Text information only via the File | Import | XLS option. If you have existing data in the P-Text table in the database, be sure the track names are different for the imported data. And, be sure to choose Update Existing Record in the overwrite options.
