Help Window Freezing - RockWorks15.chw file can't be created

Recommended Posts

Here's an addendum to an another forum thread about the RockWorks15 Help window freezing up. (see also: https://www.rockware.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1633)

The RockWorks15 Help system (which is run by a Microsoft "hh.exe" engine) is supposed to create a binary 'index file' on the fly, the first time the Help window is launched (and/or the Index tab clicked). Typically this file is stored under C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\HTML Help (on Windows 7), where the user has full permissions. We've found that not all systems do this, and the system tries to create the file in a folder where the user does not have permissions. The result is that when the user selects Help / Contents, the help window freezes.

The solution is to manually place the index file, named "rockworks15.chw" into the main program Help folder. The most recent build of RockWorks15 (2012.3.13) will install this .chw file accordingly.
