Error message starting up RW, Symbol File

My Rockworks 15 has suddenly started the following error message anytime i try to open a new or existing project:



Loading Symbol File "*.sym"

The file that contains the symbol library cannot be located.

Hi ColumbiaTech

The error message indicates that it cannot find a symbol library to load on program startup. The simplest resolution is to have the program rebuild its global settings.

1. Use Windows Explorer to locate the global settings folder.

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, this is located in C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\RockWare.

In Windows XP this is located in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\RockWare\

2. Locate the "RockWorks15" folder inside there.

3. Rename this to "RockWorks15_old".

4. Restart RockWorks15.

The program should rebuild this global settings folder on the fly, and the default symbol library will again be available. Once the program starts, if you need to point the program to a preferred symbol library (e.g. one that you have customized) you can do so via the Project Manager - expand the

lowermost "Misc Tables" heading, double-click on the "Symbols" item mid-way down the listing, and use the Select Symbol window's File | Open menu command to open another SYM file.

Hello Molly

As per the settings provided by you for message "Unable to locate symbol file". I have done all the steps provided by you and also install the new updates of 2012. The software has giving the same message when i start the software. Kindly resolve my problem.

The next steps would be:

1) To confirm that the RockWorks symbol library "rw_sym.sym" exists on your computer. Use Windows Explorer to look for this file:

---> Windows Vista and Windows 7: in C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\RockWare.

---> Windows XP: in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\RockWare\

(where "username" is your windows account name).

2) If that file does not exist, re-install RockWorks15.

If that file does exist, then be sure that RockWorks is set up to use that file as default.

---(a) Open the RockWorks menu settings file into Windows Notepad:

------> "C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\RockWare\RockWorks15\menus.ini" (Vista/7) or

------> "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\RockWare\RockWorks15\menus.ini" (XP)

---b Look for the line that starts with "SYMBOL_TABLE=" and set the path to the symbol file you just looked at. So, the line would read:

------> Windows Vista and Windows 7: SYMBOL_TABLE=C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\RockWare\rw_sym.sym

------> Windows XP: SYMBOL_TABLE=C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\RockWare\rw_sym.sym

---c) Save the changes and close menus.ini.

3) Restart RockWorks.

If you continue to have problems, this would best be addressed via email: tech @ rockware.com. Please specify the revision date of the software (displayed in the title bar at the top of the program window) and include any "bug report" that the program may display.

As a follow-up to Step 2b above (12 Jan 2012 posting):

If you do not see a line in the "C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\RockWare\RockWorks15\menus.ini" file (or in XP: "C:Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\RockWare\RockWorks15\menus.ini") that starts with the words "SYMBOL_TABLE=" and if the first line in that file is not "[sYS]" but instead "[GENERAL]" then follow these steps:

(1) Close Windows Notepad and the "menus.ini" file.

(2) Again rename the AppData "RockWorks15" folder to "RockWorks15_old2" as described in the first posting.

(3) Use Windows Explorer to open the RockWorks15 program folder. (typically C:\Program Files\RockWare\RockWorks15 or C:\Program Files (x86)\RockWare\RockWorks15)

(4) Open the "System" sub-folder.

(5) Delete the "menus.ini" file you see there.

(6) Reinstall RockWorks15.

(7) Restart RockWorks15.
