  1. Singular Matrix in Chemical Solver

    This is a TOUGHREACT error that indicates a "poorly defined chemical system". Typically, you would want to create a model in a separate program such as PHREEQC or GWV that defines minerals and water chemistry in equilibrium. You can then bring that into a TOUGHREACT model as initial conditions. Best Regards, Alison
  2. The GRDECL import should work with simple mesh configurations. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Cell Layers should be continuous. If cell layers truncate against upper or lower boundaries or internal surfaces, the import will likely not work. 2. You need to be sure that the cell boundaries are rectangular and oriented along the x and y axes. If the cells are oriented at an angle to the axes, the import will not work. 3. The program only imports mesh geometry and porosity values. Other material parameters will be ignored.   3. Sam, You should be able to import this through the Excel|Multiple Tables menu. If the Location and Lithology data have already been imported into the database, you can choose to just import the Stratigraphy by deselecting the Location and Lithology Tables in the Block Selection tab.
  4. Edit Lithology in Sections

    Ismena, There is not a direct link between the RW2D files and the borehole data or models, so you will have to recreate the sections if your lithology data has changed. Regarding the annotations, if they are stored in a separate layer in your original RW2D files, you could select the layer and copy and paste the annotations over to the newly created cross-sections. You could also delete all of the layers other than the annotations in the old sections and append the annotations to the new sections through the File|Append menu.   5. Ca Ma, Would it work for you to add a cell with a very large volume to the model and assign it a lower pressure, so that flluid will flow into the cell? If you think this would work, you should take a look at the option to add Extra Cells (which are non-geometric cells) to a model. This is discussed in the PetraSim Manual. Best Regards, Alison
  6. Export to MODFLOW

    Rosialine, RockWorks does not currently include any tools for linking RockWorks lithology models to MODFLOW Flex. The program does include some tools designed to export data to a Groundwater Vistas MODFLOW model. Please take a look at the documentation for these tools in the help files. I think you could probably manually modify the DIS file created by MODFLOW Flex so that it can be used to extract a lithologic value for each cell in your MODFLOW model. You will have to figure out a way to import that data into your MODFLOW Flex file. If you'd like to pursue this further, please send us your lithology model and your DIS file, and we'll try to help you through this process. You can send these files to tech @ rockware.com.   7. Importing ESRI Shapefiles into RockPlot2D

    What type of shapefile are you trying to import (points, lines, polylines, etc.)? Regarding the coordinate system, RockWorks does not do any conversion during this import. You should make sure that the shapefile is in the same coordinate system and units as your project. You may need to reproject the shapefile and re-export it from GIS before importing it into RockWorks. If you continue to have problems, please send the shapefile and a description of the problem to tech @ rockware.com.
  8. Export to MODFLOW

    Yes, this is available under the Grid|Filters|Polygon tool. You'll need to create a polygon table that contains the xy locations for the vertices in the polygon.
  9. Export to MODFLOW

    When you create a stratigraphy model, top and base RWGRD files are created and stored in your project directory. They are named based on the names of the stratigraphic units in the project. To export one of these RWGRD files as an ASCII file, to go the Grid|Export menu in the Utilities portion of the RockWorks program. There, you'll find the option to export both ASCII file and Surfer GRD files, which would probably work as well in Visual MODFLOW Flex. I hope this helps!
  10. Export to MODFLOW

    How you approach this probably depends on which MODLFOW interface you are using. I think in most cases, the ASCII XYZ export (through the Grid menu) will likely load as a surface into your MODFLOW interface. I would probably turn off the header, and you can adjust the delimiter based on your preference (tab, comma, space, etc.). Also, if you are using Groundwater Vistas v7 and RockWorks17, we have added some new tools for exporting grids in a format that can be automatically loaded into Groundwater Vistas. You can find more information about this by doing a search for Groundwater Vistas in our Help files.
  11. Effective or Total Porosity in TOUGH2 EOS1

    Jared, I believe that you would want to use effective porosity, but am really not sure about this one. I would recommend that you submit this on the TOUGH forum hosted by LBL. The TOUGH authors are definitely the most qualified people to answer this question. Thanks, Alison
  12. Valentina, Well plots are used to plot mass accumulation in the cells that intersect a well. So, if wells are inactive, you will not be able to view well plots in a SIM file. There was a known bug in PetraSim v2017 where non-interpolated line plots (cell-based plots) were not plotting correctly, so this is likely what you are encountering.   13. Unable to make fence diagram

    It appears that you need to add vertical exaggeration to the striplog (and most likely any sections or fence diagrams you create). To do this, adjust the Intended Vertical Exaggeration Factor to something larger than one (I would suggest 10 to start with), and then click the Process button to re-create the strip log. If you continue to have problems, it would probably be best for you to send us your project, which includes the database and your current menu settings.     Dear Rudyabo, Thank you for your input, we are currently working on some tools that will allow both RockWorks RwGrd files and block models (representing lithology, permeability, etc) to be imported into the Groundwater Vistas MODFLOW interface.   16. Exporting 3D solid model voxel information

    Msayed, Because RockWorks uses constant spacing in each direction, the connection areas and distances are going to be constant in each direction. Regarding corners, you could shift the cell centers over 1/2 a cell distance in each direction to get a list of cell corners (you would also have to add corners along three boundaries of the model. We do not have a specific export written that includes this information. If you want to provide a format that is a standard for import into an FEM model, our programmers can take a look to see how hard it would be to reproduce.   17. Wellbore-Reservoir Coupled

    The pressure represents the flowing bottom hole pressure described by the TOUGH2 manual (introduced on page 64). PetraSim includes a Start-up time option that is not available in the standard version of TOUGH2. You may be able to create multiple wells that fall into the same cells that start up at different times (presumably, the pressure in the producing wells would decrease with time, so you would start up new wells with lower flowing bottom hole pressures at later times in the model). You could also restart your model at the times where you need the pressure to change or for certain wells to be disabled (which is probably how people using the standard version of TOUGH2 handle this).
  18. Manage completion history of a wellbore

    Hi Julia, My suggestions would be to either: 1. Store date information in the Caption field 2. Add a custom field to the Well Construction table to store date information Unfortunately, neither of these fields can be queried during plotting, but you would at least have a way to identify when each item in the well table was in place.   19. I agree that it is strange that changing the output settings would affect the simulation run. I think its possible that adding specific print times would do this, as it changes the time steps required by the simulation. Changing the number of time steps output shouldn't change the simulation. I would be happy to take a look at your simulation and see if I can determine what is going on. Please send your SIM file to Alison @ rockware.com. You also might want to post this question on the TOUGH2/T2VOC forum supported by LBNL, as the TOUGH2 authors are really the most qualified to answer questions like this. Best Regards, Alison
  20. These parameters are described in the TOUGHREACT manual starting on page 31. CGUESS: initial guess for the concentration of the individual primary species (not total concentration), in moles/kg H2O (molal) for species other than H2O and in kg for H2O. Input values of CGUESS do not affect results of speciation calculations, but could affect the number of chemical iterations required during initial speciation computations. CTOT: if ICON=1, CTOT is total moles of aqueous species, and total amount (in kg) of liquid water for H2O. Molalities are then internally computed as CTOT/CTOT(h2o). If ICON > 1, refer to the discussion of ICON above for the meaning of CTOT.
  21. The mass fraction is based on units of mass (so grams of salt per grams of water).
  22. Hi Yuki, If you mean production of energy, yes, I would expect that to decrease over time assuming you are pumping cooler water into the model. If you mean the actual amount of water coming out of the wells, then I would think that there are many factors that are coming into play that might effect this (such as the type of production well you are using in the model). For example, are you using a constant mass out production well, or a well on deliverability production well? Best Regards, Alison
  23. It sounds like you are running into convergence problems, but its hard to know what could be causing these problems without looking at your model. I would recommend that you look at the output file to determine what model element is causing the problem. The simulation includes information about the element with the highest residual for each time step. You might try rerunning your model with the print options for this cell turned on, so that you can look more closely at the state of the cell as the model proceeds. Its possible that it is reaching a pressure/temperature not supported by the simulator. If you continue to have problems, you can send the SIM file directly to me at Alison @ rockware.com.     Julia, I can't think of a faster way to do this. I believe that the DXF and contours still require that the program re-triangulate the surface, so it probably wouldn't speed up the process. I do think that removing internal boundaries could possibly help, as the creation of regions can be pretty time consuming. Best Regards, Alison
  25. Inquiry about the Extra Cell in PetraSim

    You are correct, "Dist. to" is the distance between the center of the connecting (geometric) cell and the connection to the extra cell. Dist. This is the distance of the connection in the extra cell. Depending on what you are trying to represent with an extra cell, these distances could be very large (for example, if you are trying to represent the atmosphere) or very small (for example, if you are trying to represent a well bore).
