Any new installation of LogPlot8 completed after December 31, 2022 will generate a catastrophic error message initially when opening LogPlot8.

To resolve this issue, after installing LogPlot8 you will need to run the LP8LicensePatch program below (i.e. first install LogPlot8 and then run the LP8LicensePatch program). Upon running the LP8LicensePatch program you should be able to open LogPlot8 without any issues.

I imported into my licensed Log Plot 8 program a composite log I created with LogPlot 7 under the trial version. Everything works fine, except that the "sample graphics"for the geophysical logs do not appear in the column headers. In legend design, I have the header linked to the LAS file and I have checked the "Plot Graphic" bottom. The sample graphic is visible in the design view, but it is blank/missing in the final/print view of the log. Because I have problems importing all the LAS files that I want in Log Plot 8 (there will be a separate post for that problem), I want to continue to use the template I successfully created in Log Plot 7 (almost).

A LogPlot7 user in Europe started encountering problems after a LogPlot update which also coincided with a Windows update. Each time he tried to access the Compile window in LogPlot, he was the message "Unable to create or display the Depth dialog."

We discovered that the Compile window depths and scale, and the log design's Page Setup settings were displaying very, very large numbers, thus mucking up all hopes of meaningful pagination and scaling in LogPlot.

Importantly - the Page Setup window showed mixed number formats: the printer settings at the top of the window showed numbers like "123.456.789,00" but LogPlot's page settings at the bottom of the same window (and his Windows 7 system) were using "123'456'789.00" (default for the German / Switzerland setting on his computer).

The solution: Access the Control Panel | Clock Language and Region | Region and Language window. Click the Additional Settings button to access the number format options. Click the Reset button at the bottom of the window, to reset all of the number settings back to those which are default for the language-region setting.

When LogPlot was re-launched, the Page Setup window showed sensible page dimensions, with the correct number format, and the compiling again worked.

This is common with Windows 9x - 95 or 98 and sometimes with NT/2000 when the image is very large.

1. Try reducing the resolution of the image. Many of these images were created for use in company logo's on letterheads and other printing applications and are generally much larger than needed for computer use. Keep in mind that the printer resolution is usually no greater than 600 dpi and that an image of 300 dpi will usually have acceptable quality.

2. You can also reduce the size by reducing the color depth. At 32 bits per pixel, an image is 8 times larger than a 16 color image. Avoid the 256 color mode, since this requires the use of palettes and may show undesirable side effects.

3. Make sure that you have the latest video card driver for your computer.

This error can occur on program startup if LogPlot7 does not have permission to write to the "System" folder in your "\My Documents\LogPlot 7" folder. Since most users have full permissions in My Documents (though, it's still a good idea to check*), we've found an easy solution is to rename "\My Documents\LogPlot 7" to something like "\My Documents\LogPlot 7 old", then restart the program. It will rebuild the folder on the fly, and permissions are usually refreshed properly. Any customized files in the old folder (patterns, symbols, keywords, etc.) can be moved to the new, working folder.

(*You might also right-click on the Windows Start / Documents shortcut, choose Properties, and check the default My Documents folder that Windows is using.)

A customer recently saw this error when starting up LogPlot 7, before even getting to the startup licensing screen. The I/O Error 32 occurred when the program was trying to copy system files (function "TSysCopyForm.copy_system_files").

It turns out the default "documents" folder for this user's account was mapped to an external drive which was no longer connected. So, instead of the usual "C:\Users\username\Documents\" path (in Vista and Windows 7), LogPlot was trying to write to a music folder in the F: drive (aka thin air).

You can determine the default Documents folder for the current user account via the Windows Registry (which is also where LogPlot gets this info). Using RegEdit, access HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders, and its Personal key.
