Overview > GWB in industry

GWB in the environmental, mining and petroleum industries

The Geochemist's Workbench has application in numerous industries, including environmental protection and remediation, petroleum, and economic geology. Some of the more common applications of the GWB are listed below.

GWB in Environmental Protection and Remediation

The Geochemist's Workbench has the following applications in the environmental industry:

  • Migration of landfill leachate
  • Acid rock drainage
  • Metal mobility
  • Redox control on solute mobility
  • Solute attenuation
  • Nuclear waste storage
  • CO2 sequestration (Carbon capture and storage)

Subsurface injection of caustic pesticide wastes into dolomite host, causing formation deterioration, and replacement of dolomite by calcite and brucite.

GWB in Mining

The Geochemist's Workbench is used in the mining industry for the following applications:

  • Acid rock chemistry prediction
  • Leach fluid design
  • Tailings effluent composition
  • Pit lake chemistry
  • Metal mobility

A more detailed example of how the GWB can be used in uranium solution mining (ISR) can be found here.

GWB in Petroleum

The Geochemist's Workbench has the following applications within the Petroleum industry:

  • Scaling predictions
  • Reservoir souring
  • Flooding simulations
  • Formation damage
  • Frac jobs
  • Fluid compatibility
