New Features

New in ArcView 9.0

ArcView 9 has new geoprocessing tools
ArcGIS 9 introduces major new capabilities for geoprocessing in ArcView 9. Along with mapping and data management, geoprocessing is one of the fundamental capabilities of GIS software. Geoprocessing allows you to perform advanced spatial analysis and automate frequently performed tasks such as site suitability analysis and merging data sets.

ArcView 9 provides a rich suite of geoprocessing tools for various data management, conversion, and analysis tasks. ArcGIS extensions, such as ArcGIS 3D Analyst and ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, provide additional geoprocessing capabilities unique to the particular extension. For more information on which geoprocessing tools are available with each product, see the geoprocessing tool matrix.

Geoprocessing tools can be used in dialogs, a command line, scripts, and models (ModelBuilder). ModelBuilder provides a graphic environment for building geoprocessing work flows, helping you design and implement complex geoprocessing models. You can drag tools and data sets onto a model and connect them in an ordered sequence of steps to perform complex GIS tasks. ModelBuilder helps you document your GIS methods and procedures so they can be shared with anyone.

ArcView 9: annotation and labeling management
With ArcView 9 a new set of tools enables you to centrally manage the numerous labeling properties found in most maps, reducing the time and effort in creating cartographic labels. Dynamic labels can now be paused for easier manipulation, and unplaced labels are much easier to manage in ArcView 9. In addition, task-based tools have been added for updating and creating geodatabase annotation, allowing you to focus on your annotation creation work flows and not the tools that enable those work flows.

ArcView 9: enhanced raster support
ArcView 9 includes significant enhancements to raster storage, management, query, and visualization. A new user interface is introduced to manage, explore, and create raster data. ArcView 9 adds raster attribute and spatial-based querying and selection. These improvements will be especially noticeable to users with very large collections of raster data (from hundreds of megabytes to terabytes).

ArcView 9: improved performance and stability
Quality and performance are always important in any release. In building ArcView 9, we have focused a core team on researching and addressing the critical issues our users may face. This work has resulted in much faster startup time, reduced memory usage, and many more improvements leading to software that is easier to use and more robust.

ArcView 9: new data and maps
ArcView 9 includes significant improvements to the rich set of data supplied with ArcView. This includes updated features and new data sets as well.
