New Features

New in ArcGIS 9.1

ArcGIS 9.1 focuses on quality, usability, and performance and includes all ArcGIS 9 service pack improvements. In addition, it is the main vehicle for the release of Network Analyst on the ArcGIS platform and for introducing the ESRI Developer Network (EDN).

ArcGIS 9.0 users who are current on maintenance will automatically receive ArcGIS 9.1 at no additional cost. ArcGIS users not current on maintenance and/or ArcView 3.x users should contact Customer Service for information on how to receive ArcGIS 9.1.

Learn about key enhancements for the following ArcGIS 9 products:

ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo)
  • Improved Quality, Stability, and Performance - ArcGIS 9.1
  • ArcGIS 9.1 includes many improvements and adds support for large data sets.
  • Improved Geoprocessing - ArcGIS 9.1 matches the graphical user interface with the geoprocessing functionality by adding geoprocessing tools to the ArcGIS Desktop products: 63 tools to ArcView, 86 tools to ArcEditor, and 22 tools to ArcInfo.
  • New easy-to-use Merge tool for combining data
  • Productivity Enhancements - Include the following:
    • Pan to selection
    • Pause drawing
    • Better support for longer field names
    • Swipe tool
    • And much more
  • Save As Tool to Ease Migration - The Save As tool allows you to save a copy of documents (.mxd, .sxd, .lyr) as 8.3 with no changes required in the 8.3 projects. Please note that the ArcGIS 9.0 release uses the same format as ArcGIS 9.1 and that new ArcGIS 9.0 and ArcGIS 9.1 features and functionality, such as 9.0 and 9.1 geodatabases and new raster formats, are not backward compatible and cannot be used in ArcGIS 8.3.
  • Better OGC Support - ArcGIS 9.1 offers broader support of OGC map standards including WMS, WFS, and Catalog Services.
  • New Improved Data - With ArcGIS 9.1, all users have access to 150 m worldwide natural view imagery and nationwide street data that was previously available in the ArcGIS StreetMap extension.
  • Crystal Reports XI - The latest release from Business Objects.
  • New Extension Licensing - Some extensions are now available with core ArcGIS products at no extra charge.

ArcView 9.1

In addition to the ArcGIS Desktop enhancements, ArcView 9.1 adds 63 geoprocessing tools. ArcView 9.1 users can now create and edit subtypes in personal geodatabases and access the full range of linear referencing functionality including creating routes, editing routes, and performing geoprocessing on linear-referenced data.

ArcGIS Extensions

Server GIS

Server GIS includes ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, and ArcSDE. These products are used to create and manage server-based GIS applications that share geographic knowledge within larger organizations and with many other users on the Internet.

New for Server GIS at version 9.1:

  • ArcIMS 9.1 - The ArcIMS ArcMap Server is now supported on the Solaris and Linux operating systems. The ArcIMS ArcMap Server allows users to take advantage of the advanced data access and cartographic capabilities offered in ArcMap by publishing ArcMap documents (MXD files) on the Internet. ArcIMS also now includes an updated WMS Connector. The WMS Connector is a Java Web application that provides an OGC-standard WMS interface to data served by image and ArcMap image services.

Note: RockWare is only authorized to sell ArcIMS- not ArcSDE or ArcGIS Server

Embedded GIS
  • ArcGIS 9.1 Engine - throughout this release, developers will notice improved quality and usability and more code samples. Microsoft Windows, Red Hat Linux, SUSE LINUX, and Sun Solaris are supported operating platforms for 9.1. Among the new features and functions are:
    • The new Network extension can be used by developers to build and deploy custom network applications
    • The StreetMap extension is now part of ArcGIS Engine Runtime and carries no extra runtime charge
    • There are improved Visual JavaBeans components
    • There is a new License Contro
    • New commands include globe fly and swipe tool

GIS for Developers
