RockWorks allows you to create cross-section and profile diagrams of a variety of types of data – such as modeled lithology, stratigraphy, aquifer, geochemical or geophysical data, fractures, etc. It can be very helpful to layer these profiles to determine, for example, the spatial relationship between a contaminant hotspot and the stratigraphic layers, or your water levels and the lithologic environment.

As we describe in a recent blog post, you can use simple copy and paste tools in RockPlot2D to create these overlays.

1. Create both sections, and display them in adjacent windows on your screen. Be sure that you create the diagrams along the same line of section, with the same perimeter (border) annotations; this assures that the panels occupy the same coordinate space.

2. Copy the contoured section panel (the pink one here) by clicking on it and typing Ctrl-C. Then click in the stratigraphy section window, and type Ctrl-V to paste in that layer. The panel should overlay exactly.

3. Double-click on the pasted layer to adjust its minimum contour level and/or transparency. You can also copy/paste the contour legend into the combined plot.
