Tips
RockWorks15: Using Grid Surfaces to Introduce Pit Materials into a Lithology Model

It can be tricky to limit the distribution of spatially-restricted lithology materials, such as fill materials in buried pits, when you interpolate a lithology model from borehole data. Here are some tools you can use to prevent the lithology types from bleeding outside their pits.

- Create duplicate boreholes for the holes in the pits, using a pseudo name (e.g. "DH-01_copy") and WITHOUT the material type to be restricted to the pits.
- Interpolate the lithology model using the pseudo holes (without the pit material), being sure the original boreholes are disabled.

The cross section below represents a slice through the lithology model.

RockWare Software: RockWorks15

- Create a grid model that represents the elevations at the base of the pit material.
- Create a grid model that represents the elevations at the top of the pit material. These grid models could come from a variety of sources, such as imported from DXF contours or created from scratch.
- Filter the existing lithology model with these surfaces (Utilities Solid / Filters / Grid Filters / Two Bounding Grids), setting the nodes between the grids to the pit material G value.

The cross-section of the filtered model, below, illustrates the constraining grids with red outlines.
